School Counsellor
The British School of Bucharest is seeking an enthusiastic and committed School Counsellor to join our team.
The job holder is responsible for providing students with guidance and support in dealing with various issues such as personal, academic, parental or social pressures and delivering counselling services to students. The position requires professionalism while promoting the interests of the students, the school and carrying out the responsibilities and tasks below:
- Be a key member of the Pastoral team and work alongside the Form Tutors and the Heads of Year
- Meet regularly with the Pastoral team.
- Be the trusted and available person when a student requires an emergency ‘talk’.
- Promote positive peer relationships, conflict resolution, and respect for diversity.
- Support students in developing coping strategies, self-awareness, decision-making skills, and resilience
- Promote awareness of mental health and wellbeing within the school community
- Keep accurate, secure records of counselling sessions in line with data protection policies.
- Maintain professional boundaries and adhering to the ethical principles of the counselling profession
- Identify when referral to external services is necessary and liaising appropriately.
- Contribute to whole-school wellbeing initiatives and staff training when appropriate.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and supervision to maintain professional standards and knowledge up to date.
- Offer counselling services upon request from the Heads of Year, SLT, students or parents
- Be a visible staff member at lunch and break times so that students can access you.
- Be available to meet with parents to discuss issues requested by Heads of School.
- Provide written records of observations and meetings (with parents, students and staff) using English of a high standard
- Develop and support therapeutic and behaviour management programmes as requested and need it
- Design and offer workshops on bullying for parents, teachers and students, and support the Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHE) programme as required.
- Help the school establish contacts with external professionals who could support our students (speech therapy, psychotherapy, other mental health professionals)
- Support liaison with other schools to ensure continuity of support and learning in the case of transfers of students with additional needs.
- Act as a consistent role model to all students, providing them with guidance
- Build non-judgemental relationships based on trust and respect
- Work in conjunction with the school policies.
- Always follow the safeguarding policy and procedures and inform the Safeguarding team if a child or others are at risk of harm.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in psychology
- Registered with COPSI as a counsellor or psychotherapist
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a counsellor working with children and young people
- Working knowledge of counselling models, methods and approaches
- Ability to identify and respond to students’ needs
- Excellent listening and problem-solving skills
- Must be patient and compassionate
- High level of integrity
- Excellent level of English language
- Desire and ability to work with students of various age groups, multicultural backgrounds and levels of ability towards accomplishing their educational goals
