At the British School of Bucharest, we offer two debating CCAs, one for Juniors and one for Seniors. These clubs provide students with the opportunity to develop essential skills in researching topical, controversial subjects, crafting persuasive and informative speeches and working collaboratively as a team. We believe debating is an essential tool for personal growth, fostering not only academic skills but also offering students valuable insight into current affairs, politics and international relations.

Skills Developed in Debating
- Research & Critical Thinking: Develop the ability to research and analyse complex issues.
- Public Speaking: Hone persuasive speaking and argumentation skills.
- Collaboration: Work effectively as part of a team, practising respectful disagreement in the style of British Parliamentary debating.
- Writing Skills: Improve essay writing and argument development across subjects.

Opportunities to Compete
Throughout the year, BSB debaters compete in inter-school tournaments with other international schools in Bucharest and beyond, as well as participating in “friendly” debates. Senior students have the opportunity to take part in prestigious events such as the Winston Churchill European Leaders Under 19 competition and the COBIS Debating Competition. In the Summer Term, we host the BSB Middle Schools Competition for students under 15, offering exciting experiences and the chance to connect with peers internationally.
Debating is not just about making an argument; it’s about understanding the world around us and challenging it, learning to see from different perspectives.
