Introducing A-Level Physical Education at BSB
As our sporting facilities continue to develop, we are proud to introduce A-Level Physical Education as the newest addition to our Sixth Form programme.
Designed for students who are passionate about sport, A-Level Physical Education is a fully academic qualification examined by Pearson Edexcel. It combines scientific study with practical application, helping students understand not only how performance improves, but why. The course can support progression into a wide range of university pathways, while developing analytical and evaluative skills that are highly valued in higher education.

A-Level Physical Education: An Academic Approach to Sport
A-Level Physical Education provides students with a broad and integrated understanding of sport and physical activity. Throughout the course, students explore the scientific principles that underpin human performance, alongside the psychological and social factors that influence success in sport.
They apply this knowledge through practical performance or coaching, as well as performance analysis, developing a clear understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. The course encourages students to think critically, analyse performance and evaluate how improvements can be achieved.
The qualification is structured around four components:
- Scientific Principles of Physical Education, covering applied anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, movement analysis and biomechanics.
- Psychological and Social Principles of Physical Education, exploring skill acquisition, sport psychology and the relationship between sport and society.
- Practical Performance, where students are assessed as either a performer or a coach in a physical activity of their choice.
- Performance Analysis and Performance Development Programme, requiring students to analyse performance, identify areas for improvement and evaluate a development programme.
For students with a genuine passion for sport, A-Level Physical Education can support progression into degree pathways including Sport Science, Physiotherapy, Sports Psychology, Sports Therapy, Coaching, Strength and Conditioning, Sports Management, Performance Analysis and Physical Education, among many other related disciplines.
